  • LG Smears New Slider In Touch Sensitive Buttons

    05 February 2008
In the run up to 3GSM, you inevitably get a raft of releases from manufacturers either looking to beat the rush or - in most cases - announce a lowlight that would otherwise get lost amongst the highlights. Looking at LG's 'KF510' I'm tempted to place it somewhere between the two On the plus side, the KF510 is a perfectly decent looking handset and at just 10.9mm thick it is certainly skinny for a slider and rooted firmly in the fashion phone sector. Also winning it props is LG's decision to go upmarket with the materials and the handset uses a metal frame and scratch resistant tempered glass screen. The 3MP integrated camera isn't to be sniffed at either. Full story:http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-phones/news/2008/02/04/LG-Smears-New-Slider-In-Touch-Sensitive-Buttons-/p1
  • Vodafone slashes mobile data charges

    05 February 2008
Vodafone is slashing the price of its mobile data rates in half, albeit temporarily. The cost of its Mobile Broadband 3GB package is being reduced from £30 to £15 for a "limited period", though Vodafone would not confirm how long this will run for. Customers who exceed this limit will be charged £15 for each 1GB. Less regular internet users are also catered for, with a 30-day no commitment plan for £20 per month. However, Vodafone was unable to tell us what the fair usage policy on the package was at the time of writing. Full story:http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/162120/vodafone-slashes-mobile-data-charges.html
  • Mobile World Congress next week, LG announces KF510 early

    05 February 2008
It's almost time for a dedicated Shiny crew to chuck their comfiest shoes into their suitcase and tread the halls in Barcelona - yes, it's the not-exactly-called-3GSM-anymore GSMA Mobile World Congress, and we'll be snapping up all the news and bringing you video reports a-go-go when the show kicks off on the 11th of February. In the meantime, LG has given us a teaser of things to come with the announcement of the KF510 touchy-feely slider. Why early? Well, either it's not quite as exciting as everything else, or LG wants to beat the rush. Either way, the skinny, 10.9mm thick handset is quite an elegant offering in Stardust or Sunset - that's grey and red for us non-marketing folk. A three megapixel camera, MP3 player, touch sensitive controls and scratch resistant tempered glass screen give it a higher-end feel than it might otherwise have; all that remains is to decide whether touch sensitive controls fill you with wonderment or frustration. • Motorola may quit mobile phone market

    01 February 2008
The struggling American electronics company Motorola is considering breaking itself up through a sale or flotation of its poorly performing mobile phones business. After a year in which it has been assailed by angry shareholders, Motorola last night announced it was exploring a "structural and strategic realignment" to revive the fortunes of its handsets division. "The company's alternatives may include the separation of mobile devices from its other businesses in order to permit each business to grow and better serve its customers," the company said. Such a move could reshape the global mobile phones industry, leaving the rump of Motorola to concentrate on radios, networking equipment and household electronics such as television set-top boxes. Although renowned for its ultra-thin Razr phones, Motorola has been losing market share; it slipped from second to third place in the world last year, behind Samsung and the industry leader, Nokia. Motorola has been facing break-up calls for more than a year from the billionaire shareholder activist Carl Icahn, who owns 3.3% of the stock and sought boardroom representation last year. Icahn greeted the announcement with satisfaction: "For many months I have been publicly advocating the separation of mobile devices from Motorola's other business and I am pleased to see that Motorola is finally exploring that proposal." He warned, however, that he intends to try to unseat four or five of Motorola's 13 board members again at this year's annual meeting: "We believe Motorola is finally moving in the right direction but certainly still has a long way to go."
